Importance of Good Mental Health
“While good physical health adds years to life, good mental health adds life to years.”
The current fad for gymming and the craze for six-pack abs and beautifully sculpted bodies reflects a growing realization of the need to maintain good physical health. All this is fine but what about the “controller” lying inside us, the all-powerful computer that decides everything that we do or do not do? The new heights of sporting excellence achieved by Indian players in Para-Olympics are just one proof of what a focused, powerful mind can achieve in spite of physical handicaps. Only a healthy mind, caught in a physically challenged body, would be able to run a race on a wheelchair!
We may have reached “the Mars” but we are hardly aware of how a stressed, depressed or aggressive mind “mars” our life. It may become visible as panic attacks, anxiety, phobias, non-assertiveness or workplace dissatisfaction. The rising figures of absenteism, low productivity, stress, depression and suicides and road rage bear ample testimony to the many ills plaguing our minds. Psychologists are valuable mental health resources, who can help us solve our “inner” problems and lead a happier, more successful and more productive life. Therefore it’s high time we woke up to the inherent power of our mind and try to realize its unlimited productive powers.
